Vintage Christmas Cards

October 28th, 2009

There is something to be said about vintage Christmas cards that make you wonder how families in the past celebrate their Christmas. Was it any different form the way we celebrate it now? You can be sure that the setting of their gatherings would be something else. We now have so many technological advancements and innovations in our time that some Christmas traditions have been forgotten.

One particular tradition that comes to mind is the making of Christmas cards. It has always been one of the things we all look forward to. Some families would opt to have a family photo taken and turned into a Christmas card. Some would buy a box set of Christmas cards and just write the holiday greetings themselves. Others would let their imagination and creativity take lead and create their own Christmas cards to give to family and friends. This is a fun activity that you and your kids will truly enjoy doing because it involves color, drawing and more.

Here are 3 easy ways to create your unique vintage Christmas card:

Interaction is Key!

Involving everyone in the project is a must. Since you’re making Christmas cards, even the simplest drawing or sketch can be meaningful and made into something unique and special. Start with the shopping of materials. Ask your kids what type of paper they would want to use. Stick to postcard sheets that may come in different colors. Add crimping scissors, punchers and other materials they can think of that you can all use to add on your card. Assign a child that his card will be for this person so he can already think of possible images to draw in the card.

Bring Happy In!

Lay out all the materials and start by teaching them to fold the paper into half. Some might want their cards to be shaped like a bell or a candle. Let their imagination run and give them room for mistakes. Guide them with what they can sketch on their cards. Images of Santa, little kids playing in the snow, a snowman, a Christmas tree or reindeers are possible images. They can even use the nativity scene, the three wise men on a camel with the star up ahead or a drawing of baby Jesus on a manger.

Make It Unique!

Color the drawings with crayons, markers or even watercolors. They can even make additional cut outs of other drawings and paste them on their cards to make it look like a collage. Adding simple words like, “Xmas is here!”, “Ho! Ho! Ho!” or the traditional “Greetings!” can make the card stand out. You can use glitter dust or paint to write the letters or newspaper and magazine cutouts of letters. Finish the card with any Christmas poem or a personalized message and have the kids sign their names, making their mark of ownership on the sweet masterpiece they have created.

You can be sure that this Christmas, the cards you sent will be remembered and will be treasured by anyone who receives them. Knowing that a lot of effort, time and love were spent on making each vintage Christmas card, it will be a memorabilia worth keeping.
